Traveling with Atlas Obscura amid COVID-19 How We’re Adapting Our Trips Destination Requirements (via Embassy Pages)
Trip Overview
Overview

Sink into the rhythms of the Mediterranean as we seek out hidden gems and small wonders along Spain’s Costa de Azahar, or Orange Blossom Coast. We’ll visit off-the-beaten-path towns, sites, and experiences that rarely receive fanfare but form the region’s beating heart. Whether we’re walking among 2,000-year-old olive trees, watching a live pilota match, or viewing an unexpected art collection in a small medieval village, we promise you’ll be charmed and delighted.

This is slow travel at its best, with an itinerary intentionally curated to capture beauty—a journey that encourages you to savor every moment. We’ll immerse ourselves in a region rich in tradition, culture, and diverse natural landscapes. We’ll eat ridiculously well at every opportunity and in the true spirit of the Mediterranean lifestyle, we’ll take the time to truly connect with each other and also with the people we meet along the way.

Highlights
  • Sip wine in hand-carved caves beneath a Moorish fortress
  • Experience one of Spain’s most sacred traditions, the sobremesa
  • Dine with local artists in an orange orchard
  • Attend a live pilota game and eat with local fans
  • Take a boat ride on an underground river

Itinerary

Itineraries and daily schedules are subject to change. We expect to do everything listed in the itinerary, though the order may be rearranged based on weather or other local conditions.

Trip Leaders

Leanna Eaton
Leanna’s love for capturing the attention of an audience began at the age of 11 when she won a public speaking competition with a speech about door-to-door salesmen - written by her mother. Her family was convinced she was destined for a life in Canadian politics. After successfully completing three social sciences degrees and starting a promising career at a global development agency, she seemed to be on course. Until that fateful weekend in Newfoundland…nearly two decades later and much to everyone's surprise, she now lives in Germany, having traded in her dreams of a life in politics for a career in tourism. In 2007 she met her travel industry soulmate Alba (one of the trip leaders for Atlas Obscura’s Small Wonders and Good Eats trip in Spain) in a small Berlin café and they both instantly recognized a shared vision for what travel should be and a knack for finding the special spots that reveal the soul of a place. Working together throughout Europe and Canada, their tours are unique local experiences that "could only happen here" - wherever here might be. Leanna speaks English and German fluently and could use French and Ukrainian to get by in a pinch.
Alba Marco Cambronero
Since her first ‘solo’ trip to Ireland at the ripe old age of 8, Alba has simply loved traveling. Growing up in an international and multicultural family in Spain, her imagination was captured by the possibilities of travel and her passion for exploring and getting to know new cultures was ignited. Following her own life-changing year as an exchange student to Denmark where she met her husband and future father of three energetic boys, Alba furthered her studies in her other big passion Art&Design and moved to Florence, the art capital of Europe, to undertake post graduate work. It was in Berlin that she found her best travel buddy and future travel business partner as she found they were both passionate about finding and sharing those special, idiosyncratic, and unique elements in every destination. Alba and her family now make their home just outside Stockholm, Sweden. Since 2007, Alba has been designing and leading tours across Europe in search of the “small wonders”. Together with her business partner, Leanna Eaton, they are heartfelt about sharing these “little” discoveries with the Atlas community. Alba speaks Spanish, English, Danish, Italian, German, and Swedish.

Activity Level

Travelers should be comfortable staying on their feet for long stretches at a time and walking anywhere between two to three hours at a time, sometimes on uneven ground. Many of the towns we visit have pedestrianized centers, requiring us to walk significant distances around town to reach sites and restaurants, often over cobblestones and up and down some steep streets. The picturesque countryside we are exploring is hilly, so we will encounter hills and stairs on foot. Most days, we'll be out and about with time to rest at lunch and dinner, both of which will take place on the later side. Accommodations and alternative activities will be offered, where available, for any travelers with limited mobility in order that everyone can enjoy the trip to the utmost.
