Trip Overview
Overview

Morocco is a colorful country where traditional craftsmanship continues to be practiced and proudly displayed, and this is especially true of the rich culinary tradition. You see it in the open-air food markets, smell it in the aroma of secret spice blends wafting out of windows, and you taste it in every meal. On this journey, we will participate in North African culinary traditions and see the historic sites that shaped them, including an overlooked wonder of the world, the Amtoudi Granary, a fortress-like food vault and an early form of banking that once served as a crossroads of culinary tradition for the Berber people. As we traverse Morrocco to this historic granary and back to the magical city of Marrakech, we will experience the treasures that Morocco is best known for: a "sea of sand" in the Sahara Desert, the gorgeous Atlantic Coast city of Essaouira, Kasbah Ait Benhaddou, solemn mosques, frenetic markets, and many cups of sweet mint tea. Throughout this adventure, we will enjoy home-cooked meals and demonstrations that will bring the flavors of Morocco to life.

Highlights
  • Explore the souks (markets) with local food experts
  • Learn the ancient secrets of Berber cuisine
  • Prepare iconic Moroccan dishes
  • Follow the routes of desert nomads
  • Observe the processing of argan oil, Morocco’s most famous export

Additional Info

Pricing

The listed price of this trip is per person based on double occupancy. If choosing to take the optional Hot Air Balloon ride on the last day of the tour, the cost is $260 per person.

Traveling Solo?

You’re in good company. Solo travelers typically make up about half of our small groups. With curiosity at the center of our experiences, there’s a natural camaraderie that develops over the course of a trip. We have two options for you:

Shared Room (subject to the latest Covid-19 guidelines): You'll be matched with another solo traveler of the same gender.

Private Room: Have your own room, subject to availability, for a supplemental cost of $1160. After booking your trip, please request a private room when you fill out your traveler information form and we’ll add the option to your booking and final balance. The capacity for private rooms is limited and will be granted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Activity Level

Travelers should feel comfortable walking four to six miles each day, with lots of time spent moving around and on your feet. You should be comfortable walking on both flat and uneven ground, as well as stairs. Drive time will average between 1 to 3 hours a day, with two long drive days ranging from 4 to 6 hours.

Arrival & Departure

Our trip arrives and departs from Marrakech, which is served by the Menara Airport (RAK). We will provide an airport transfer to your Marrakech trip hotel*. If arriving in Casablanca, we can arrange a transfer service to/from Marrakech for $220 each way per car.

You may depart at any time on the last day of the tour.  Afternoon arrival and departure are ideal to get the most from our trip’s activities and meals. An airport departure transfer is included*.

*Airport transfers are only provided if arriving & departing on the trip dates, or if pre/post arrangements have been made through Atlas Obscura.

Accommodations

We will be splitting our time between desert resorts with pools and full amenities and riads in cities. Riads are Moroccan guesthouses that are built into traditional courtyard homes with gardens. They are intimate, family-run lodgings with personalized, artistic flourishes, like local artworks and crafts. Some guesthouses/riads are unable to supply air conditioning.  We will also be staying in the desert for two nights at two different camps. The first tented camp will have en-suite bathroom/showers and eco-friendly toilets in all tents. The second tented camp will include a hand basin in the tent, but will not have en-suite bathrooms. There will be a designated block in the camp area including several shower and basin stations with hot water.

Trip FAQ

Your participation in this adventure will directly help improve the sites we visit. The Amtoudi Granary is being improved by local preservationists, but it requires more money for restorations and benefits from international attention. We hope to help elevate it to the UNESCO World Heritage Site status that it so deserves. Your money will go directly to family-owned riads, families that host us for meals, and co-operatives that empower women in a society that has a long way to go towards gender equality. Most of our guides are independent, local experts that earn their living by promoting the villages they love
